Budget packing

By this point the candidates are already in the order the caller should see them, so packing has one job, which is deciding where to stop. This page assumes you have read fusion and reranking. The code is src/aizk/retrieval/packing/budget.py, src/aizk/retrieval/models/result.py and src/aizk/retrieval/templates/recall.md.j2.

Six lines, and the shape matters more than the size. It is a prefix cut, not a knapsack. A candidate that would fit in the remaining room is still dropped once an earlier one blew the budget, because merit order is the whole point and reordering the tail to squeeze in a cheap late item would quietly promote it above things that beat it.

The + 1 per candidate pays for the newline that joins the lines.

Candidate.token_count is deliberately cheap.

RecallResult.from_candidates is the boundary between the retrieval internals and anything a caller sees. Six internal Lane.Kind values collapse onto three public provenance classes.

Nothing else crosses. Lane names, cross-encoder scores, statement rank and the direct flag all stay inside, and chefe run aizk-eval trace is where you go to see them.

Each Evidence also carries its scopes and, when the candidate has both an artifact_id and an artifact_content_id, a resource_uri of the form aizk://artifacts/{artifact_id}/contents/{artifact_content_id}. That URI points at the exact stored revision that grounded the line, and an MCP client can fetch it under the same authorization.

Scope names come from the caller. Memory.recall in src/aizk/memory.py builds the mapping from the caller’s own id to a scope named private plus one entry per Logto organization, so the same row renders with different labels for different readers. shared_scopes then dedupes by name and drops private, which is why the header lists only the organizations involved.

to_markdown renders through recall.md.j2 and returns an empty string when there is no evidence, so a caller with nothing to show gets nothing rather than an empty scaffold.

The template does three things worth naming. It lists the shared scopes with their descriptions at the top so the reader knows whose memory this is. It states plainly that recalled content is evidence and not instructions, which is the prompt-injection boundary written where the model will actually read it. And it joins each item’s scopes with , because a cell in two scopes is readable only by their intersection rather than by their union, exactly as scopes describes.

The indentation is not cosmetic. Every evidence line is indented four spaces including its continuations, so a multi-line source snippet stays inside its own bullet and cannot be mistaken for a new item.

context_token_budget defaults to 2048 and is the default for both recall() and the MCP tool. The MCP boundary lets a caller raise it up to mcp_recall_budget_max_tokens, which is 16384. A caller asking for more evidence is asking for a longer prompt, and that is their call to make, so the ceiling exists only to keep one request from swallowing a whole context window.
